The Girl in the Ice by Robert Bryndza

I rather like maverick female detectives in books. They usually have a bit of baggage, get away with an awful lot they wouldn’t be able to in real life, are resolute, dedicated and hard-nosed but always seem to have a soft-centre. Do they defy credibility? Of course they do, but this is fiction. And in a crime-thriller packed with drama and suspense some poetic license is allowed, necessary even.

All of the above can be found in this book. With bells on.

Detective Erika Foster returns to work after an enforced break and is met with the gruesome discovery by a young man of the body of a woman frozen beneath a thick layer of winter ice in a park. The girl is the daughter of an influential and very rich man who is used to a world in which money talks very loudly. Despite clues leading to one man in particular, Erika’s instincts tell her otherwise. Trying the patience of her superiors, the dead girl’s family and putting her career on the line, she finds her own life in grave danger when she doggedly pursues what her gut is telling her.

Page turner. Fast paced. Gripping. Suspenseful. Exciting. Intense.

Yes, all of the above. I was sucked in right from the start and really did find this book hard to put down. It’s always good to find out who did it, but I did feel a bit flat after The End! So I was rather pleased to find that Detective Foster features in a sequel. It’s the first time I’ve pre-ordered a book. I think that just about says it all!
